72 Million Americans Extremely Obese
Obesity affects more than one quarter of the U.S. population, according to the country’s health authorities. The extreme of the scale costs 147 billion dollars each year.
DANGEROUS
Obesity has become one of the greatest threats to public health, said Thomas Frieden, director of the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday.
According to the Centre’s research, about 72 million Americans are affected by obesity, and the number is growing.
Lethal Risk
In 2000, no U.S. states had an obesity of over 30 percent. Today there are nine states where every third resident has a BMI of over 30. Since 2007, 2.4 million people in the United States crossed the BMI threshold, which is the medical definition of obesity.
If we do not initiate action against obesity rapidly, more people get sick and die of obesity-related illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes type 2 and some forms of cancer, “said Frieden.
Expensive fat
CDC estimates shows that obesity costs 147 billion dollars in health care per year. Meanwhile, health for an extremely overweight person on average costs almost $ 1,500 more than for a normal overweight American.
The African-American part of the population has the highest risk of suffering from obesity, while those with Latin American background are the second most vulnerable.
Respectively 37 percent and 30 percent of the adult population in the two groups are affected.
Social Problem
Obesity epidemic in the United States has increased faster than anyone could have imagined, “says Frieden, stressing that over weight is a societal problem that requires intervention.
The survey from the CDC shows that the state of Mississippi holds the highest amount of obesity in the nation, while Colorado has the slimmest people.
If you go to Denver you see bike trails and walking paths that are actually widely used, which indicates that Colorado has a better culture of physical activity than other states, says William Dietz of the CDC center.
Political solution
The researchers said the need for a political campaign against obesity is great. In New York and California authorities consider, among other things, to tax the drinks with high sugar content.
In another study that was presented in the medical journal Preventive Journal of Medicine Tuesday, researchers determined that the proportion of extremely obese in the United States between 1993 and 2007 increased by 90 percent.
The study also concludes that obesity-related deaths have increased significantly.
